Veterinarian use of chlorine dioxide
The efficacy and potency of Chlorine dioxide are undeniable. Swift and targeted actions with a wide range of anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties make chlorine dioxide a sweetheart among other disinfectants.
Other disinfectants can be used when we need to clean surfaces or instruments, but something more potent and reliable is required to sterilize air and surfaces. Especially where a Vet hospital’s environment is concerned, it needs to be cleaned of any bacterial traces.
Role of Chlorine dioxide in sterilizing the air in animal health care centers:
Pathogenic bacteria can cause outbreaks of harmful diseases in already ill animals. To address this issue, the department of environmental resource management in Taiwan conducted a study to measure indoor air pollution levels in animal hospitals. They mainly studied the efficacy of different disinfectant materials and compared the results with TEPA guidelines (Taiwan Environmental protection Administration).
Out of various disinfectants used, only chlorine dioxide produced a record fifty percent decrease in the levels of microbes in the air. Furthermore, multiple uses of this miraculous gas at various intervals successfully reduced this percentage to sixteen percent. Thus advocating for the benefit of CLO2 in vets’ clinics and health care centers.
Use of CLO2 in eradicating feline bacteria:
Almost fifteen years ago, the ICU department for animal care at the University of Pennsylvania also administered a study on the use of chlorine dioxide in medium-sized public health care centers. The motivation for this study was a sudden Salmonellosis outbreak in their animal intensive care department. Chlorine dioxide exposure resulted in the elimination of salmonella and various other microbial spores that are the main reason concern for several veterinarian physicians. These strains include B. atrophaeus and Geobacillus etc.
Role of chlorine dioxide in eradicating animal viruses:
According to research by The American animal hospital association, CLO2 and potassium peroxymonosulfate can abolish very resistant feline viruses. Along with these two chemicals, they also used four other chemicals, namely an ammonium compound, citricidal, NaClO3, and water as a control. There was a marked decrease in those viruses in the areas where chlorine dioxide was used, thus rendering it useful in handling sudden viral outbreaks in animal care centers.
ClO2 as a fumigant
The fumigation properties of this extraordinary gas are remarkable. In order to test these characteristics, a test chamber was established during a study by the Japanese association for laboratory animal science. Two extremely virulent bacteria strains, E. coli and Staph. aureus, were taken into account. The marked reduction in these bacteria colonies after treatment with chlorine dioxide gas was proof of this gas’s miraculous antibacterial property. A concentration of 10ppm resulted in 100 percent eradication of these colony-forming bacteria. While at lower concentrations, the results were still prominent enough to be considered.
